Semester Two

Design Proposal

Outset

My interest in exploring the time-space of my project for the Sligo Sudbury School stemmed from a Position Paper entitled 'Harnessing Time' written in Autumn 2021, available below.

Site

The site is a plot of flat land divided diagonally by a small river. A historic 18th century schoolhouse building facing onto the road along with a cluster of other later single storey additions. The rear field is currently not built upon, and has quite a high water table.

This initial 3d sketh proposal begins to imagine an extension reaching toward the rear field, where the school hall would be built, along with the interventions of pond and playing fields.

These axonometrics show the final proposals for the extension (left) and repurposing of the old schoolmaster's house to the cubby space (right).

To the left, colour is used to differentiate green timber elements, i.e. trunk pilotis, from seasoned timber used to construct the studio spaces above.

Structural Axo

This axonometric shows the built proposals for the whole site, including courtyard buildings for sheltered flexible play surrounding the schoolmaster's garden, the piloti extension, changing pavilion, and lastly multi-purpose hall, built as a lamella structure out of manageable sized timbers.
